Girls Season 6 Episode 1

Unless you live under a rock, then you knew Girls season 6 premiered on HBO on February 12 at 10:00PM EDT. I’ve been waiting for what seems like forever to see the final season of this show. I always loved the show Girls for the most part although I didn’t enjoy season 4, but with season 5 it made its way back into my heart and onto my list of shows I have to watch every Sunday.

I will warn you that I’m not giving any spoilers or plot twists, just sharing how the episode made me feel and how real it is in comparison to actual lives. You ever think, when you’re watching a show, just how much it is not real life and how none of that stuff would ever happen? I do all the time when I watch TV, but not with the show Girls. The show opens with a scene that reminds me of my own life.

Haven’t you ever accomplished something, whether it’s getting a huge promotion, your press release was picked up by the Wall Street Journal, you got that part in a movie…the point is, you or someone you know probably accomplished something big and everyone in your life feels some kind of way about it. Your friend who talks to you about the big win while she’s on the toilet, the one parent who is so proud they cry and tell everyone about it, the one friend who is slightly a hater, because they are not doing so well in their own life, and the one protective parent who gets pissed off at your critics.

This episode was just so real to me. There’s a scene where Hannah gets a writing opportunity where she basically adjusts her dreams and goals just to sound eager for the job. We’ve all been there in an interview when they ask you why you want to work for them and you have to make up a reason why they have clearly always been the company of your dreams. Really, you just want the job and they are probably the company of the moment.

When we really get to focus on Marnie for the first time this season, you realize she is everything that old people hate about millennials. In fact, she is everything normal millennials hate about millennials. She’s the girl who is seeing an online therapist, who suddenly becomes spiritual and goes for a run only to drink a Starbucks coffee right after, and she can’t be in a relationship with just one person because she has too many options.

My favorite scene from the episode basically went like this: “Elijah: Can I use your room while you’re away for a teeny, tiny little orgy?” Hannah: “Yea, sure, of course!” Elijah: …Only the elite. So probably like 15…I think it’s going to be a great way to network.”

Elijah and Hannah have such an honest friendship that I can really be a part of!! My favorite scene from the episode basically went like this: “Elijah: Can I use your room while you’re away for a teeny, tiny little orgy?” Hannah: “Yea, sure, of course!” Elijah: …Only the elite. So probably like 15…I think it’s going to be a great way to network.” There is no way you are having a teeny, tiny, little orgy in my room. And especially wouldn’t have one with 15 people, which is not teeny, tiny or little!!

We see that Jessa and Adam are annoyingly still together…am I the only one still uncomfortable with their love connection? They certainly are not uncomfortable as we see her completely nude on the couch and Adam is comfy enough to hug Ray in nothing but undies.

One thing is for sure, this season certainly reminds us of all the things we love about these characters. Hannah still hasn’t changed and will always be the girl who doesn’t believe that a guy really likes her, or that she can just have fun and live in the moment. She constantly has to overthink and critique everything, making many moments more awkward than they need to be. But that is the beauty and honesty of the show. Whether she is sitting on her hotel balcony getting a vagina tan or deciding to sleep with her surf instructor because he sounds sexy when rapping an old Twista song (can we all just agree that Riz Ahmed from The Night Of is kinda cute?)…she is what real life looks like and I like what I’m seeing.

Basically this is the episode that reminds you that all of the characters, even though most of them are in a good place, still have a lot of growing to do. They still have unresolved issues with exes and friends and ex jobs so this season is going to be a good end to this story. You can catch the latest episode on HBO, but you must have a subscription (I steal my Mom’s, lol).
